Happy date night, everyone! Whether you’re having a night in or packing a picnic, these super easy whiskey cocktails will bring a little fun and excitement to your evening. Not that you need it. (Rawr.)
Blood Orange Whiskey Sour
Whiskey sours aren’t alll sour – they’re a really balanced and delightful blend of sweet, sour, and whiskey. This one is red to represent your burning passion, and to make it a little more fun than an ordinary whiskey sour.
- 2oz fresh lemon juice
- 2oz fresh blood orange juice
- 2oz simple syrup
- 2oz your favorite whiskey
Blend in a shaker with ice and serve chilled. Taking it with you? It’ll travel well! Pop it into a container that will keep it cold and off you go.
Bourbon & Berries
This cocktail was created by the lead bartender at San Diego’s Herb & Wood – William Van Leuven. The idea was to incorporate a seasonally rotating berry syrup to update the drink every few months, so feel free to improvise with what you have on hand, or toss in something new and exciting.
- 2oz of your favorite Kentucky bourbon
- 1 barspoon of strawberry-vanilla syrup (see below)
- 3 dashes of angostura bitters
Add all ingredients to a double rocks glass with 1 large ice cube, and stir for 20 seconds. Add more 2-3 more ice cubes.
To make the strawberry-vanilla syrup, add 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and the scraped beans from 1 vanilla bean to a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Once sugar is dissolved, add 2 cups of sliced strawberries and simmer on low for 15 mins. Remove from heat, mash strawberries, and allow to cool. Strain out solids and store in the fridge for up to a week. Try with other berries!
Dessert Bonus: Whiskey Affogato
Typically to make an affogato you would need gelato and espresso, but you can definitely wing it with some dark coffee and a scoop of ice cream. And whiskey, of course.
- 2 scoops vanilla bean ice cream
- 2oz your favorite sexy bourbon or whiskey (mix with caramel sauce for extra yum)
- 1 cup espresso (or dark, stong coffee)
- 2 tablespoons toasted walnuts
Grab a glass, scoop in ice cream, and top with toppings for a very adult ice cream sundae.
